Investment Tax Worksheet and Tutorial - Beta
The Dividend Worksheet:
The Dividend Worksheet is where you enter all dividend information and is the simplest of the three worksheets. There are no formulas on this worksheet. You must enter all information yourself.
To fill out this part of the worksheet, first you enter all the necessary information for the year: (from left to right) Company Name, the Date the Dividend was Paid, the Dividend Yield at the time of payment, the Dollar Amount of Dividends Paid, and whether or not the dividends were reinvested.
To calculate the dividend tax, first you sum up the
dollar amount of all your dividends which is found in column D. You
can use Excel’s auto sum feature for this. After highlighting all
necessary cells (click the left mouse button on the first/top cell and then
drag down as necessary holding down that left mouse button until you arrive
at the bottom cell. Then release the left mouse button), just click the auto
sum button on the Standard (top) toolbar. If you enter can’t see this
toolbar select View à Toolbars
à Standard.
Notice how the numbers in the column for dollar amount paid are highlighted. Since these numbers are highlighted, we can add them using the summation button which is located on the top of the toolbar (circled for this example). For you technophobes out there who don’t want to put up with this computer nonsense (I’m talking to you Mr. Buffet) then just add the numbers by hand and place the result in an appropriate cell on your spreadsheet. You may notice that Excel is automatically adding dollars signs. To get rid of this feature, just highlight the relevant cells and push the dollar sign button on the top of the toolbar. To calculate your dividend tax just multiply this sum with your dividend tax rate (note: be careful of Alternative Minimum Tax if it applies to you)
That last column is for dividend reinvestment. This is a simple Yes or No column. Yes if the dividend will be reinvested and no otherwise. If you are reinvesting dividends make sure to fill in the appropriate information in the “Buy Worksheet.” after this column has been filled out.
Note: You can move between cells from left to right in Excel by pressing “tab” key on your keyboard. You can move to the next line by pressing return or enter on your keyboard.
